THING 4

I think it is important for people to interact and read each other blogs.  One reason is because that way you do not feel like you are wasting your time writing things that no one is looking at.  And another reason is because you can get a lot of good feedback from people looking and commenting on your blog.  From the reading I thought it was a good point how some people do not like to interact in person and in blogging they can express themselves and yet at the same time not having to worry about talking to someone in person.  I commented on Greg Rufus, Brittany Byerly, Meghan Bussabarger, Summer Brown, and Shantice Johnson.  With Greg and Meghan’s I commented on their THING 3’s.  I just think it is such a good tool to be able to use in the classroom and that it would really help out everyone.  I also commented on Brittany’s THING 8.  She was talking about Mashups and how she could use that in her Art class.  I thought that was a great idea on how you can take a picture of your artwork, upload it to Mashups, and be able to change things on it.  When I was reading Shantica’s THING 6 she was talking about a website called yelp.  I thought that it was a great website.  It allows you to look up things to do and places to eat in different cities all across the US.  I thought this would be something I would definitely use in my life.  The last person I commented on Summer’s THING 12.  It was again about Google and how helpful it is.  I also commented that I have a Gmail account as well and they are wonderful.  I selected all of these people and commented the way I did because I found what they talked about interesting and helpful.  Some of the information I agreed with or had the same in my blog.  And others were just new information I did not know about.  The following 2 blogs I am following is Brian Scalabrine and Rob Dyrdek’s blogs.   I found them to be very entertaining and funny.  Scalabrine is a Chicago Bull’s player and a lot of times blogs about what is going on with the team and such.  And Rob’s blog just talks about what is going on in his life.  He is involved in so many projects that it is interesting to see what he is working on.  I think blogging is very interesting but also seeing other people’s blog and commenting on them is good to do.  You get to see what is going on in other people lives and able to interact with them.

THING 12

I have had a gmail account for ever 3 years now but never really used all the things that came with google.  After learning more about the google tools I now know all that google can do to help me.  The 2 google tools I used was the google calender and google alerts.  Both of them will be able to help me in the classroom and in my personal life.  google calender I can sync to my phone so all the important dates I need to know will be with me basically 24/7.  I think google calender will help me stay organize and I can put what meetings I have or any important days of the school year I can put in there to remind me of those dates.  I think it is something I will start using everyday now and carry on into the classroom.  I also think that google alerts will be nice to have to stay up on the news.  I can put in my favorite sport teams and be able to get all the articles that include them on my google account using google alerts.  This can also be used in the classroom if you are teaching a certain subject or an event that his happening in the world at that time, you can add that to your google alert and then whenever that topic comes up in the news you get all of the articles on it.  This way you do not have to waste your time searching for the articles.  They come straight to you.  I think both google calender and google alerts will be benefitial to my personal life and inside my classroom.

THING 10

It is nice to be able to put all the sites you go to on one page.  Also it is good when you are bad, like me, on remembering websites you can put all the ones you need on one page and be able to go to that page and not worry about memorizing all the sites.   I think you can definitely use this in your classroom.  If there are a bunch of websites that could be useful for a project or has games on them to study from you can put all these on a page.  This way the kids have a easy way to get to all of the great sites you have for them to use.  In your personal life you can have all the websites you use in your daily life on one page.  It would be easy access.  Teachers can/will use RSS because they are so busy all the time that this way they have all the websites they go to and need right in front of them.

THING 8

I think that flickr mashups can be used sometimes in your classroom but not often.  I think that could be a cool way to do put kids names on their desk or to have a famous saying in flickr mashups on your wall.  But besides for decoration I would not use flickr mashups in my classroom or personal life because some of them are hard to read and I feel like they are more for decoration. I think sharing photos online is cool though.  I think that its awesome you could be on vacation and be able to upload pictures online for your family back home to see while you are still on vacation.  But you have to make sure you have photos online that you do not mind the whole world seeing.  Once it is online it is up for the whole world to see.  But I think it is good how you can upload pictures online.  You allow people to see things that they may not ever see in their life if the picture was not uploaded online.

THING 7

When I was exploring flickr I did not really get all of it.  I felt like it was basically google images.  But after looking through it I found out it was a lot more then that.  An example of a way I would use flickr is if I went on vacation but wanted to show my family and friends where I am at I could upload all the pictures to my account and they would be able to see where I was at that easy.  On my phone I noticed I could upload pictures to flickr but I never knew what that was until now.  A way you could use this in the classroom is you can make a account for your class and upload pictures of all projects and activites that you do in class.  That way parents at home when they ask their kids how was school and get the typical it was ok.  They now have proof on what is going on in school and can ask the kids how it went.  At some point I may start using flickr but as of now I will stay with facebook and twitter.  The picture I chose to get was a picture of Derrick Rose.  I just love the Chicago Bulls so I looked up pictures of Derrick Rose and thought this was just a great picture of him.

THING 11

I found google reader as the best method.  It is basically like google where you type in what you are searching for and then on your RSS everything related to that topic comes up.  I did not have that much trouble with any of them but think google reader was the best one.

THING 9

I thought this was a easy but fun THING.  My process was pretty simple for this.  It was to get it done but still see what those websites had to offer.   I thought they were all pretty cool.  I could use this in my classroom a lot I think.  I can have a smiley face or a famous person saying a math equation or something of that nature.  Especially if you have young kids they would love it.

THING 6

Once I saw YouTube as a choice I could talk about I went directly to it.  YouTube is a site where you can upload any videos and allow the world to see them.  There are people that become “YouTube sensations” because they may get over 50 million views on their video.  I like how anyone can really put up anything that they want.  You do not have to pay for it, it is all free.  One thing I would like to see change but that will not change is advertisements on some of the videos.  Some videos may have a 20 second advisement that just takes up time.  But I know that YouTube needs those in order for it to be free for all of us.  YouTube is sometimes my enemy because instead of studying or writing I paper I find myself watching random videos for an hour instead.  I definitely think you can use YouTube for education.  If you are doing a science experiment you can upload your example on YouTube for your class to see but also watch other classes do theirs.  You can see the similarities and differences of them and you might end up changing some of your experiment to match a better one you saw on YouTube.  This is just one of the many ways you can use YouTube for your classroom.

THING 5

I think that School 2.0 is going to be good for education.  When I was reading the article Teachers 2.0 it was making me think how teachers all across the country can basically teach a lesson plan together if they wanted to.  They can get lesson plans, tips, and even test from other teachers.  School 2.0 to me means how education is going to get even better in the future.  Kids are getting more and more resources for them to use in their education.  These resources give them different opportunities to learn.  Schools in the future I hope will embrace the technology that they will be able to use to teach their students even more.  My sister is a 7th grade English teacher and her school has a couple of iPads for their students to use.  This allows kids to go online at their desk, to do homework activities, or to look up notes on a certain subject.  I think technology now in the classroom is great but can not wait what School 2.0 has in the future for us.

THING 3

When asked to make this blog I had ideas on how I would use this for my personal life, but I had no clue how I could use it for inside the classroom.  I am thankful that there is a site I can go to where I can find out some ways on how I could use this blog in education.  After looking through some of the ideas, I found many USEFUL ways to use this blog for education.  I can use this blog to share my thoughts and ideas on what I am using in the classroom.  If something is working for me I can put those ideas up on my blog so other teachers can use them if they need to and vice versa. It will give me a way to share and also get ideas from teachers all around the country.  I could also start a blog for my classroom.  If I did this I can put announcements, example of papers from kids in the past, and even keep parents up to date on what is going on in our classroom.  There are so many ways you can use a blog in the classroom.  It is a simple but an effective way to not only to teach your class, but give tips to other teachers all across the country.

THING 2

I chose to make the name of my blog Matthew Hasse because that is the name that most people call me so I thought that is what I should call myself in my blog.   I also added a little title to my blog.  Instead of just having Matthew Hasse, I added Life At The Peay below my name.  I did this because I am putting work that I’m doing at Austin Peay into this blog, but I also intend to continue using this blog after this class.  I will upload postings on life as a basketball player here at the Peay.  I would talk about what we do before games, after games, in practices, and also what we do in our free time on away trips and at home.

I thought making this blog was actually pretty cool.  I was not really excited about doing it, but once I started making it I loved it.  I thought it was really easy to make.  I did not have any difficulties making it.  I think the avatar reflects my personality because it looks like me.  I created the avatar to look like me and dress like me because I am being myself in my blog so I figured I should have the avatar look like the person that is writing the blog.  The only thing I would change about the avatar is change the jersey number to thirty-three because that is my college number not twenty-two.  But I guess twenty-two will have to do for now.

THING 1

THING 1
While I read through the lifelong learning habits I was able to connect to some of them.  I was able to tell which one was the easiest for me but also which one was the toughest for me.  I believe that I can begin with the end in mind.  Whatever I am doing at the time, such as if it’s playing basketball, doing school work, or working at a job I have, I always have the end in sight.  I always think to myself what minor goals can I achieve during the process that will help me achieve the big goal at the end.  In high school I had a goal of playing division one basketball.  I set up a work out plan, traveled to certain spots to get noticed by schools,  got good grades so I could attend college, and stayed out of trouble.  All of these I wrote down on a piece of paper my freshman year and held true this plan in order to reach my goal of playing division one basketball.

The hardest learning habit for me would be accepting responsibility for my own learning.  There are times where I may need a push to study a little harder, or study a little more.  It is hard when you get done with a basketball game and have to study for a test that you may have the next day.  I have to accept the responsibility and sometimes I may not always study as much as I should for a test.  There have also been times where I have needed more help than what the teacher/professor gave me.  And I may not of took the responsibility of learning the material because I thought that my teacher should of taught it to me.

Throughout the class I want to learn how to use all the tools and websites out there that I can use in my everyday life and in the classroom.  It’s been a short amount of time and I have already learned so much.  The excel session in class was very interesting and helpful.  I did not think making the blog was going to be that interesting, but I think it is going to be my favorite thing we do all semester.  I can see myself using it even after this class.  It was so easy to set up and really make the page be your own.  One tough thing that has hit me so far in this class is just getting all my usernames and passwords correct for all the sites we are logged into.  For some stupid reason I have one or two of them different and it really messed me up.  But I am on the right path now and I’m doing great.
